Vaccinations and "bullshit". Click on the picture below for a very true video on the subject !
Vaccination and the history of cows
The French made fun of it !
It would never ever get past the ethics committee these days.
And it was almost too simple an idea to work. Yet it ended up being one of the greatest medical advances of all time.
And it was all about cows ! ( Well, cows and milkmaids ).
And even though most people don't realize it, is still named after cows. It is called vaccination. Which (sort of ) means cowification.

The age of plagues - Smallpox and Black Death
Infected people often died in the streets, with no one willing to haul the bodies away
Cast your minds back to the time of the great plagues. At one time more than one third of the population of Europe was killed by epidemics.
Imagine an infection that could be caught as easily as a modern cold. But as deadly as flesh eating disease. One could start feeling sick in the morning, be bed ridden in the afternoon, and be dead by evening.
Black Death ( also known as the "Bubonic Plague", because of the "bubos" or bumps it created, or "Pneumonic Plague" because you could get it by breathing the same air as an infected individual) killed up to one third of victims.
Smallpox also killed at least one third of the people it infected. The rest were blinded or scarred for life. With characteristic "pock marks" that in the modern era can only be seen occasionally on those minimally scarred by the childhood disease chickenpox.

Cowpox prevents smallpox....
Milkmaids got cowpox, but seldom contracted smallpox
One English physician had a crazy theory. He noticed that for some reason the only people who seemed protected from the smallpox plague were young women who milked cows, the milk maids.
The physician, an astute observer named Edward Jenner, thought that perhaps being infected with a common cow virus called “cowpox” somehow later made milkmaids immune to smallpox.
The sequence is shown in the pictures below.
a) Cows got cowpox on their udders
b) Milkmaids became infected with cowpox on their hands
c) Previous cowpox infection seemed to protect milkmaids from smallpox forever
Let's experiment on a child ....
'The Cow Pock - or - the Wonderful Effects of the New Inoculation' (Published by the Anti-Vaccine Society)
In 1796 Edward Jenner took a young boy named James Phipps and injected him with cowpox scabs from several of the local heiffers. A few weeks later Jenner deliberately infected the lad with potentially deadly smallpox.
Theoretically this could have killed the boy. And definitely would have lost the good doctor some browny points if the child had died.
The boy didn’t even get sick. He had become immune to smallpox. Jenner spent the rest of his career spreading the news about this lifesaving technique. Of course the French did not want to give an English physician any credit, so they made fun of his “cow injections”. They referred to Jenner’s technique as “en-cow-ment”. The French word for cow is “vache”, and so the technique became known as “vache - ination" or "vaccination". (Which literally translated would mean "cow-ification". Moo ! )
Despite this amazing success it took almost two hundred years for Jenner’s smallpox vaccinations to become widely popular. People poked fun at Jenner, suggesting (such as in the cartoon above ) that he was trying to turn people into cows.
And generally gave vaccination the sort of distrust which it still ( unjustly ) has today.

Smallpox on the Fraser River
Stolo woman with smallpox
In the meantime there were many outbreaks of smallpox, even locally. In 1782 - twenty six years before Simon Fraser expored the Fraser River -- a devastating smallpox epidemic was introduced into the Sto:lo people of the Fraser River. Over 60% of the first nations peoples living along the river died horrible deaths over a period of a few weeks.
In the villages between Hope and Vancouver it was common for 25 to 30 people to die in a village in a single day. One village near the entrance to Pitt Lake was completely wiped out.
The most recent local smallpox outbreak occurred in Vancouver, in 1932. About 100 people who had refused to allow themselves to be vaccinated were admitted to Vancouver General Hospital. One third of them died, many of them within days of contracting the disease.
A vigourous program of vaccination slowly defeated smallpox. The last recorded case of wild smallpox was on 26 October 1977.

Smallpox is an extinct species. Polio may be next.
Janet Parker - the last person in the world to die of smallpox
Smallpox is now extinct - the first time we have ever been able to completely eradicate an infectious virus from the face of the earth. There has been no need to vaccinate anyone against smallpox since 1980.
The last person ever to die of smallpox was Janet Parker, shown in this picture just before her death on 26 Oct 1977. She was an English photographer who was visiting a lab in Birmingham, England where smallpox was being researched.
There was a lab accident, she became infected , and died. The head of the lab later committed suicide. Currently smallpox still exists, but only in labs in Moscow, and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Both the U.S. and Russia save samples for "research". (ie possible biological warfare )

Polio
Polio may soon follow as the next extinct viral disease.
As recently as 1959 there were 1887 cases of paralytic polio in Canada. A vigorous polio vaccination program was started in the 60’s, with the result that polio no longer exists in North America.
The World Health Organization hopes to make polio the second great extinct viral infection within the next ten years. (This vaccine is still administered in North America because visitors from other countries may still carry the virus. For example there was an outbreak of polio in Abbotsford recently, due to visitors from a European country who refuse polio vaccinations for religious reasons.)

Rotary is trying to kill polio
Rotary International has been part of the fight against polio. They have been funding a vaccination campaign worldwide. Their plan is to try and vaccinate so many people that soon the last few cases of polio will have nowhere to go.
Polio is functionally extinct in developed countries due to vaccination programs. Soon it may also be extinct in 3rd world countries. And once everyone in the world is immune - polio will make history as an infection that has been permanently cured.
Polio will vanish from the earth just as smallpox has done. And polio - since it is not a good biological weapon that weird governments would stockpile - will stay gone !

But it is not dead yet - recent outbreak in the Republic of Congo
Notes from the Field: Poliomyelitis OutbreakRepublic of the Congo, September 2010-February 2011 Ministry of Health, Republic of the Congo; World Health Organization Republic of the Congo Country Office
Introduction: On November 4, 2010, a case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) was confirmed in a resident of the port city, Pointe Noire, the first WPV case in Republic of the Congo (ROC) in 10 years. The WPV1 isolate from this resident was genetically most closely related to WPV1 isolated in Angola in 2010.
Subsequent investigation, including active case finding, revealed increased acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) hospital admissions beginning in September. Weekly admissions rose from approximately 10 AFP patients in early October to approximately 80 by the end of October and November. With response immunization activities, weekly AFP admissions fell to fewer than five by the end of December.

Case fatality rate was 40 % ( 187 of 486 infected people died )
Polio virus : "wild" on left, covered with antibodies on right
A provisional total of 554 AFP cases were identified nationally, with paralysis onset from September 20, 2010, to February 27, 2011; 374 (68%) of the AFP cases were among males. Overall, 465 (84%) AFP cases were among residents of the neighboring departments of Kouilou and Pointe Noire, where the outbreak apparently began and where approximately 21% of ROC's 4.2 million persons reside. The case-fatality rate (CFR) in Kouilou and Pointe Noire was 40% (187 deaths of 465 cases), compared with 11% (10 of 89) elsewhere in ROC. Additionally, the median age of patients with AFP in Kouilou and Pointe Noire was 20 years (range: 0–63 years), compared with 7.5 years (range: 1–68 years) elsewhere in ROC.
This outbreak appears nearly controlled, with onset of the most recent confirmed WPV case on January 22, 2011. Only 14 AFP cases have been reported provisionally in 2011, approximating the expected background frequency in ROC.

Preliminary results suggest that several factors contributed to this outbreak 10 years after the last confirmed WPV1 case in ROC. These include a low rate of childhood polio vaccination among young adults and a protracted period without WPV1 transmission in the area. Vaccination coverage has been low over the last 2 decades,* secondary to weaknesses in the delivery of health-care and routine vaccination services, complicated by civil war and conflict during 1997–1999.
All international travelers are advised to have completed a primary series of polio vaccinations before travel.

Vaccination saved the rest.
In summary, there is still plenty of polio around. This one case in Congo spread rapidly to 500 other people, and even with modern medical care there was up to a fourty percent mortality rate for someone who caught polio. For people who are properly immunized the death rate would be zero. Vaccines work !
Polio could be spreading to B.C. right now
To the left is a screen shot of a Vancouver Sun article for April 21 , 2011, discussing an outbreak of Polio on the Ivory Coast.
Local health officials believe it can be confined to African countries, but all it would take would be one infected individual on a plane to Vancouver to start our own epidemic here.
Which is why starting vaccinations and keeping up with them is so vital. Vaccinations can completely prevent polio.
We can prevent polio, but not treat it. So if you were to catch it, even in Vancouver, there are good odds that you would die from it. So get vaccinated, or risk death.

Hemophilus Influenza
Type B Hemophilus Influenza is yet another disease that is being defeated by vaccination.
This is a bacterial infection that can cause fatal meningitis or epiglottitis ( a throat infection that chokes children to death). According to figures courtesy of Dr. Rob Parker, the Medical Health Officer for this region, in 1988 there were 112 cases of potentially fatal Hemophilus Influenza B. An aggressive vaccination campaign was begun in 1992. By 1994 there were only ten cases.

Vaccination is a very good idea - Pertussis disasters
By having our children complete a full series of vaccinations we can protect them from whooping cough, or “pertussis”, as well as a dozen other diseases.
Japan had a full pertussis vaccination program until 1975, when some sadly deluded people tried to discredit vaccination. The number of children in Japan vaccinated against pertussis dropped temporarly from 70% to 20%. The incidence of pertussis climbed from 393 cases (with no deaths) in 1974 up to 13,000 cases ( with 41 deaths) in 1979.
Similar tragedies occurred in England when children vaccination levels dropped below safety levels because children were not vaccinated properly.

Herd Immunity
Improper vaccination defeats the idea that some people have that they don't need to get their own children vaccinated because "everyone else" is getting vaccinated, giving the community as a whole what is called "herd immunity".
If "most" creatures in a herd are immune because they were vaccinated, then it is unlikely that one or a few infected creatures will be able to spread the disease, because all the "herd" members that they encounter will already be immune due to vaccination. Hence, "herd immunity". However many people have bet their chidren's lives on herd immunity, and lost.

Anti - vaccination Ideology The MMR Fraud
Vaccinations are one of the most amazing scientific discoveries of all time. Yet there are people who still do not believe in them. Often because of religious reasons, or because of scientific mis-information.
One bit of scientific mis - information was that the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR ) vaccine somehow was the cause of autism.
This had actual doctors who used to believe this was true. However all the scientific data supporting this idea came from one doctor, who has now been shown to be a fraud. His has had his license taken away and has been charged criminally . More about this can be found on my Autism page.

Vaccines work
Vaccinations are not perfect, but they are close, and they are much better than the alternative. Today’s vaccines are safe, effective, and have minimal side effects. They are a natural way of allowing the immune system to help us prevent disease. ( From cowpox onwards, all the vaccines have been made of “natural” viruses).
Anyone who does not vaccinate their children is quite literally gambling with their child’s life.
