TMJ - Temporomandicular joint dysfunction
TMJ is a common problem of the jaw joint, which often happens after trauma, such as an MVA or getting a blow on the side of the head. Click on the video below for a good introductory video on how TMJ can go wrong.
TMJ has been called the "low back pain" of the head.
Just like low back pain, 2 major treatment principles are :
1) Don't go for surgery
2) Don't try and fancy gadgets
Of course, there are exceptions to the above, but not very many !
The ideal treatment for TMJ should be analogous to the treatment of low back pain - simple, non- destructive, something you can do yourself, and easy.
Hence - just like with low back pain, the starting treatments are simple things, like heat, rest, massage, and anti-inflammatories.
