Depression, Exercise, and the Internet

Lots of us don't like to take medications... Especially long term, as may be required for people with chronic disease....
An alternative to medication is exercise and internet based therapy, which can either be from a human, or from a web site.
And both work.

Regular exercise helps to stabalize mood symptoms.  Anything that gets your heart rate above about 110 releases a hormone called "atrial natriuretic polypeptide" , which acts as a natural anti-depressant.  And even more sedentary exercise, such a yoga and tai qi are also beneficial
"Spark"  is an entire book written by a pediatrician / psychiatrist, and goes through all sorts of useful information about depression.

Internet based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Counselling is a lost more simple  ( and sometimes more subtle ) than people expect.  And the basic principles can be done by a computer or  a web site.
Such as the "mood gym".  This is a web site run by the University of Australia, which helps people get counselling over the web.
Here is a web article also discussing how exercise and the internet can be used to treat depression.
