Regular exercise helps to stabalize mood symptoms. Anything that gets your heart rate above about 110 releases a hormone called "atrial natriuretic polypeptide" , which acts as a natural anti-depressant. And even more sedentary exercise, such a yoga and tai qi are also beneficial
"Spark" is an entire book written by a pediatrician / psychiatrist, and goes through all sorts of useful information about depression.

Counselling is a lost more simple ( and sometimes more subtle ) than people expect. And the basic principles can be done by a computer or a web site.
