Depression, especially if it gets your heart rate up over about 110 , is great for depression.   It releases endorphins, neurotransmitters, and a hormone called Atrial Natriuretic Polypepted.  All of these improve mood.
Pick an exercise you enjoy, so you can stick with it.

Skill One

Exercise therapy.  Granted this can be a challenge if you are very depressed, but even getting out for a regular walk is a big help.  Walking your dog is good.

Skill Two

Talking therapy
This can be anythimg from talking to a good friend to having official psychotherapy from someone who looks and acts like Freud.   This works too.  Friends are better than shrinks, and the more friends and social support the better !

Skill Three

There are medications that work with depression.  They work.  So such up and take the pills.  
No one likes taking pills.  Taking pills when there is nothing wrong with you is stupud.  But when you are sick, not taken your pills is really stupid.  So bite your pride and take the damn pills.
